In the afternoon, some family came over and we played some games. We played cards and then we played a 5-player game of Monopoly!
We have a few unwritten rules in our household about playing a 'Gentlemen's Game'. As far as properties go, the attempt is more of an even dispersement of properties so that each player has the opportunity to receive rent money and, perhaps, win. This usually makes for a longer and more enjoyable game, often relying on the luck of the dice and building strategies. We call these respectful rules 'Marital Rules'. Monopoly is often known for causing discourse - which we would like to avoid.
Anyways - then, after family left, Rj and I played more cards, some crib, some poker and blackjack (part of a Vegas board game that also includes Craps and Roulette, with a 'jackpot' space to win at the slots), then finished the night off with a couple games of Settlers of Catan.
It was all a very domesticated evening.
We play a lot of games in our household. Everything from cards to Wii games and Jackbox games on Steam. When we sit down to play board games, however, we almost always play music in the background. Something fun and light.
Over the past few game nights, I have shuffled through a list of Golden Oldies.
This list is filled with old favourites, iconic bands like The Beatles, and every song you can think of from the 1950s onward. I always manage to dance in my seat as we play.
It is a perfect mixture of nostalgia, upbeat oldies, jukebox memories, and kid-friendly. Good family fun with good family music.
I grew up listening to these songs as it was the decade my parents were born, so it was the music on which THEY grew up.
'Oldies' played in our household, when I was young, constantly. My parents often put on jukebox parties or we would simply gather in the living room for hours choosing songs for our very own jukebox to play. Oldies have always held a special place in my heart.
Even at our wedding, my father put together a presentation that contained a dozen or more of my old favourite jukebox songs, including:
• Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny Yellow Polka-Dot Bikini
• The Streak
• Yakety Yak
• Silence is Golden
• Crimson and Clover
• Ebony and Ivory
• Rockin' Robin
• Love Potion No. 9
Plus so many others.
Jukebox oldies usually accompany our games nights to this day.
What a brilliant time for music.
I love My Musical Life!
