"Wheat Kings" and "Black Velvet"

I uploaded a couple of new requests over the weekend.

Wheat Kings by The Tragically Hip was requested by an old friend, Rob, who made the request a few months after Gord Downie's passing. I knew that to perform anything by The Tragically Hip in an accoustic way had to be done with the utmost respect. Not only that, but I wanted to learn the song in more ways than chords and a melody. Gord Downie wrote with such conviction and such dedication that I wanted to take my time and understand the song as best I could. This meant that it took me a while to get the song up on Youtube, and (of course) I am still nervous covering songs from such an influential group, but I am honoured to be singing anything by The Hip.

Black Velvet by Alannah Myles is a song I have always wanted to do. Covering a song that was sung by such a vocal powerhouse is always a goal, as cliché as it may seem. It is absolutely one of those iconically 'overdone' songs at any karaoke night, but there is a reason for it. Also, after singing with a rock band for a few years, I have learned that I am a total closet rocker-chick and LOVE belting out power songs. This was always a talent I never truly believed I had, and I had to train and learn how to project in the way that a rocker can. Of course, the acoustic versions of rock songs like these are always softer and quite different, but I love every second. Thanks to Adam for requesting such a beautifully challenging song.

There *might* be another live online mini concert coming this weekend. Stay tuned.

I love My Musical Life!
