Sleep-Writing

Have you ever written a song in your sleep? Have you ever dreamt up a tune or a phrase? 

It's happened to me before where I have dreamt of an introduction or a particular phrase. My dream usually consists of seeing the visual of my finger plunking particular keys, while hearing a tune. Then I wake up and immediately run to the piano to play the keys I was playing in my dream. 

Sometimes the tune I hear in my dream is not exactly what those notes actually sound like when I play them in reality, but the results have always been pleasant nonetheless. I even use one of these dreamt-up introductions in one of my french songs. 

Well last night I dreamt of an entire song. It was like my dream had slowed down to a crawl, and my sleepy brain revealed every single word. 

Of course, when I woke up, I couldn't remember all of the words, but I did remember most of them. 

So, the first thing I did waking up this morning was Google whether or not it was already a song. Maybe it was a song I knew and my dream self felt like she created it on her own. 

Good news: it's not already a song!! 

So then I grabbed whatever notebook was close and wrote down everything I could remember from my dream. 

Within half an hour I had a concept, a rhythm, full lyrics, and 70% of the melody all wrapped up. It isn't a masterpiece or anything of the sort, but it's an entire song that came from a random dream.
