Music has always seemed like poetry set to music.
Not all poetry is meant to be used in the form of a song - sometimes the integrity of a combination of words is only effective in one medium.
In that same sense, many songs would not go over well solely as a poem.
BUT
There is an evident connection between the formation of chords and rhythm that can perfectly complement a good piece of poetry.
Lately I have been a lot more ill and I have had a lot less time to focus on musical endeavors. Lying in bed for a good chunk of time means that I can't be sitting at my piano. I'm also self-conscious about my appearance when I am recording youtube videos, so the thought of trying to record a song with my hair and face a complete disaster, singing from my bed, actually seems kind of comical.
So lately, apart from the few bars of the theme song of Jurassic Park, and singing recently for the Gutsy Walk, music has been more of a backburner hobby.
Writing, on the other hand, is often what I do when I am spending an inexplicable amount of time lying in bed. Writing, reading, and organizing my thoughts - that is my artistic contribution when music has fallen behind.
Overnight I randomly got inspired to write a bit of poetry. I haven't really written poetry until this year since University, but I remember doing well with it, so I thought I would expand a little bit. I wrote one haiku, one freeform, and one I don't even know. The last one had actually begun as a short story, but I felt as though a poem would be more effective, so I kept changing terms and shortening sentences. I removed full paragraphs and condensed them down into a few thematic words.
I have a lot to learn when it comes to writing - especially when it comes to poetry - but why not try? Some of these contests have generous prizes, and there is no chance of winning if I never submit.
So, while music has fallen a little behind, I don't feel as though I am losing my artistic side. Instead, I am simply branching out in areas with a little dust on them. If I get on a roll, who knows, maybe I'll write some of my own music again!
I love My Musical (and artistic) Life!
